Even though his father was Jewish, David grew up following his mother's faith and is an Episcopalian.When he was 4, his family had moved to Illinois. David then traveled all around the Chicago suburbs, including Evanston, Northbrook, and Aurora. He finally settled in Naperville.David attended public school. He was a wrestler and football player in high school. He played as part of the central team and was one of the best soccer players in his school. He represented his school in various competitions.After graduating high school in 1982, he was drafted into the 'United States Marine Corps Reserve' and worked there for 3 years. He was discharged as a lance corporal.David had his first brush with acting at the age of 11, when he met Ken Stien, a local horseman and trainer. Ken became his mentor and, eventually, a lifelong friend.He got his first acting project the following year, when he was cast in the 1971 film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's play 'Happy Birthday Wanda June.' He subsequently worked in a few more local plays and musicals.David then joined the chorus of a Chicago hit musical named 'One Shining Moment.' He initially had no interest in acting and had attended the audition for the musical only because he was free for the day. There, David lived with his uncle in the Bronx, an area known for its disturbed environment.
